Description

A quixotic and quite compelling carved Scottish rams horn snuff mull of small proportions. This rare, early 19th century snuff mull features enigmatic grotesques. The body displays a distinctive carved face with beard and side hair while the hinged cap has a variety of small animate masks carved in a cluster on the burl walnut top. There is a red wax seal on underside of the hinged lid and a small compartment for snuff. The body of the ram’s horn terminates with an assertive carved visage of an eagle head with beak. The eagle is the national bird of Scotland, circa 1820.
